~Aubrey Beardsley~

.
Aubrey Vincent Beardsley was born August 21 1872
and died March 16 1898
He was an influential English artist, illustrator,
and author. He was born in Brighton, England.

~
Aubrey Vincent Beardsley werd geboren op
21 augustus 1872 in Brighton, Engeland
Beardsley is vooral
beroemd geworden door zijn illustraties van epossen,
sages en bijbelse verhalen als Salomé, die hij heel
consequent in zwart-wit met hier en daar een steunkleur,
overwegend lineair op het papier zet.
.

.
Beardsley was aligned with the Yellow Book coterie
of artists and writers, and produced many illustrations
for the magazine. He was also closely aligned with
Aestheticism, the British counterpart
to Decadence and Symbolism.

Most of his images are done in ink, and feature large
dark areas contrasted with large blank ones,
and areas of fine detail contrasted with areas
with none at all. Aubrey Beardsley was the
most controversial artist of the Art Nouveau era,
renowned for his dark and perverse images and
the grotesque erotica, which themes he explored
in his later work. His most famous erotic illustrations
were on themes of history and mythology, including
his illustrations for Lysistrata and Salomé.

Japanse kleurenhoutsnede.

Beardsley was a close friend of Oscar Wilde and
illustrated his play Salomé in 1893 for its French
release; it was released in English the following year.
He also produced extensive illustrations for books
and magazines (e.g. for a deluxe edition of
Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur) and
worked for magazines like The Savoy and The Studio.
Beardsley also wrote Under the Hill, an unfinished
erotic tale based loosely on the legend of Tannhäuser.

.

.
Beardsley was also a caricaturist and even did some
political cartoons, mirroring Wilde's irreverent
wit in art. Beardsley's work reflected the decadence
of his era and his influence was enormous, clearly
visible in the work of the French Symbolists,
the Poster Art Movement of the 1890s and the work
of many later-period Art Nouveau artists like Pape,
Mucha and Clarke.

Beardsley died of tuberculosis in Menton,
France at the age of 25 on March 16, 1898.

~
Al op zevenjarige leeftijd werd bij Beardsley
tuberculose geconstateerd, waaraan hij stierf op
25-jarige leeftijd op 16 Maart 1898.

~Sunday Poem~

Painting Disappointed Love by Francis Danby

Disappointed Love
LIFE has dark secrets; and the hearts are few
That treasure not some sorrow from the world--
A sorrow silent, gloomy, and unknown,
Yet colouring the future from the past.
We see the eye subdued, the practised smile

The word well weighed before it pass the lip,
And know not of the misery within:
Yet there it works incessantly, and fears
The time to come; for time is terrible,
Avenging, and betraying.

~The Frog Prince~

The-Frog-Prince
Chapter one!

One fine evening a young princess put on her bonnet
and clogs, and went out to take a walk by herself
in a wood; and when she came to a cool spring of water
with a rose in the middle of it, she sat herself down
to rest a while. Now she had a golden ball in her hand,
which was her favourite plaything; and she was
always tossing it up into the air, and catching it
again as it fell.

After a time she threw it up so high that she missed
catching it as it fell; and the ball bounded away,
and rolled along on the ground, until at last it fell
down into the spring. The princess looked into the
spring after her ball, but it was very deep,
so deep that she could not see the bottom of it.
She began to cry, and said, 'Alas! if I could only get
my ball again, I would give all my fine clothes and jewels,
and everything that I have in the world.'

Whilst she was speaking, a frog put its head out
of the water, and said, 'Princess, why do you weep so bitterly?'
'Alas!' said she, 'what can you do for me,
you nasty frog? My golden ball has fallen into the spring.'
The frog said, 'I do not want your pearls,
and jewels, and fine clothes; but if you will love me,
and let me live with you and eat from off your golden
plate, and sleep on your bed, I will bring you your ball again.'
     'What nonsense,' thought the princess,
'this silly frog is talking! He can never even get out
of the spring to visit me, though he may be able
to get my ball for me, and therefore I will tell him
he shall have what he asks.'

So she said to the frog, 'Well, if you will bring me
my ball, I will do all you ask.'
Then the frog put his head down, and dived
deep under the water; and after a little while he came
up again, with the ball in his mouth, and threw
it on the edge of the spring.
As soon as the young princess saw her ball,
she ran to pick it up; and she was so overjoyed to
have it in her hand again, that she never thought
of the frog, but ran home with it as fast as she could.

I bought this dutch book on a flea market the other day!
It’s about two boys, Peter and Jaap, who
live on the islands, which are far at sea,
between Scotland and Iceland.

Today, the fishermen come home.
On one days father
allowed them
along and they catch a huge mackerel.
So they become the hero of the day!
