Geboren in Schiedam op 7 augustus 1932 –
en is overleden in Soest op 15 september 1995
Hij was een Nederlands illustrator,
tekenaar en kunstschilder.

Het tekentalent van Poortvliet manifesteerde zich
al vroeg. Na de mulo ging de jonge Rien werken bij
een reclamebureau en daar kon hij al enigszins zijn
talent kwijt. Hij had onmiskenbaar ook talent voor het
reclamevak, want nadat hij de dienstplicht bij de
marine had vervuld klom hij op tot senior-manager
op het reclamebureau van Unilever.

so he felt he would’t waste his talent somewhat.

Toch had Poortvliet meer plezier in zijn nevenactiviteiten
voor diverse uitgeverijen. Hij illustreerde allerlei boeken
van o.a. Jaap ter Haar, Leonard Roggeveen en
Godfried Bomans. Hij was hartstochtelijk jager en begon
zo ook allerlei natuuronderwerpen te tekenen.

drawing various nature subjects,
illustrating books was more fun for him
than being a senior manager.

Eind jaren zestig was Poortvliet zo ver dat hij zijn
baan meende te kunnen opzeggen om zich als zelfstandig
illustrator te vestigen. Hij had echter niet genoeg werk
en om toch brood op de plank te krijgen,
stelde hij een boek samen met zelfgemaakte
tekeningen en aquarellen
aan de hand van zijn jachtervaringen.

Poortvliet zag zichzelf als tekenend verteller.
Zijn tekeningen deden het verhaal, hooguit maakte
hij ter uitleg een kort bijschrift.

Hij werd jarenlang uitgegeven door
Van Holkema en Warendorf te Bussum,
waar zijn Leven en werken van de Kabouter
(coauteur Wil Huygen) maar liefst 59 drukken beleefde.
Met de kabouterserie verwierf Poortvliet
internationale bekendheid. Al tijdens zijn leven,
maar zeker ook na zijn dood is deze serie een geheel
eigen leven gaan leiden en werd ook verfilmd als tekenfilm.

David de Kabouter is een tekenfilmserie (26delen)
gebaseerd op de kabouterboeken van
Rien Poortvliet (illustraties) en Wil Huygen (verhaal).
Het was een productie in samenwerking met het
Wereld Natuur Fonds. De eerste twee seizoenen
van de tekenfilmserie gingen over de avonturen
van Dokter David en zijn vrouw Lisa.
In het derde seizoen kreeg Rechter David de hoofdrol,
altijd vergezeld door zijn rechterhand Daan.

Het Rien Poortvlietmuseum in Tiengemeten
is gehuisvest in de Marguaritahoeve,
een 19e eeuwse boerderij, waarvan het woongedeelte
is omgebouwd tot expositieruimte. Natuurmonumenten
droeg zorg voor verbouwing en inrichting van het museum.

~The old Fairy Tales~

The day is dull and dreary,
And chilly winds and eerie
Are sweeping through the tall oak trees that fringe the orchard lane.
They send the dead leaves flying,
And with a mournful crying
They dash the western window-panes with slanting lines of rain.
My little ’Trude and Teddy,
Come quickly and make ready,
Take down from off the highest shelf the book you think so grand.
We’ll travel off together,
To lands of golden weather,
For well we know the winding road that leads to Fairy Land.

A long, long road, no byway,
The fairy kings’ broad highway,
Sometimes we’ll see a castled hill stand up against the blue,
And every brook that passes,
A-whispering through the grasses,
Is just a magic fountain filled with youth and health for you;
And we’ll meet fair princesses
With shining golden tresses,
Some pacing by on palfreys white, some humbly tending sheep;
And merchants homeward faring,
With goods beyond comparing,
And in the hills are robber bands, who dwell in caverns deep.

Sometimes the road ascending,
Around a mountain bending,
Will lead us to the forests dark, and there among the pines
Live woodmen, to whose dwelling
Come wicked witches, telling
Of wondrous gifts of golden wealth. There, too, are lonely mines.
But busy gnomes have found them,
And all night work around them,
And sometimes leave a bag of gold at some poor cottage door.
There waterfalls are splashing,
And down the rocks are dashing,
But we can hear the sprites’ clear call above the torrent’s roar.

Where quiet rivers glisten
We’ll sometimes stop and listen
To tales a gray old hermit tells, or wandering minstrel’s song.
We’ll loiter by the ferries,
And pluck the wayside berries,
And watch the gallant knights spur by in haste to right a wrong.
Oh, little ’Trude and Teddy,
For wonders, then, make ready,
You’ll see a shining gateway, and, within, a palace grand,
Of elfin realm the center;
But pause before you enter
To pity all good folk who’ve missed the road to Fairy Land.

~Julien Dupré~

Julien Dupré was born in Paris on March 18, 1851
to Jean Dupré (a jeweler) and Pauline Bouillié and
began his adult life working in a lace shop
in anticipation of entering his family’s jewelry business.
The war of 1870 and the siege of Paris forced the
closure of the shop and Julien began taking evening
courses at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs and it was
through these classes that he gained admission
to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts.

At l'Ecole he studied with Isidore Pils (1813 - 1875)
and Henri Lehmann (1814 - 1882). In the mid 1870s
he traveled to Picardy and became a student of the rural
genre painter Désiré François Laugée (1823 - 1896),
whose daughter Marie Eléonore Françoise he would
marry in 1876; the year he exhibited his first
painting at the Paris Salon.

Throughtout his career Dupré championed the life
of the peasant and continued painting scenes in the
areas of Normandy and Brittany until his death
on April 16, 1910.

Julien Dupre werd geboren in Parijs op 18 maart 1851
Zijn vader was Jean Dupre (een juwelier) en zijn moeder
Pauline Bouillie en begon zijn leven als volwassene
te werken in de winkel van zijn familie.

Door de oorlog van 1870 en de belegering
van Parijs werden ze gedwongen de winkel te sluiten en
toen is Julien begonnen met avondlessen aan de
Ecole des Arts Decoratifs en het was via deze lessen die kreeg
dat  hij de toegelaten werd tot de Ecole des Beaux-Arts.

Halverwege het jaar 1870 reisde hij naar Picardië en
werd een leerling van het landelijke genre schilder
François Laugée Desire (1823 - 1896),
Hij trouwde diens dochter Marie Eleonore Françoise 
in 1876, het jaar dat zijn eerste schilderij
tentoongesteld werd op de Parijse Salon.

Zijn hele schildercarrière heeft Dupre het boerenleven
geschilderd tot aan zijn dood op 16 april 1910.

~Susan Jeffers~

Born October 7, 1942 Oakland, New Jersey
Susan Jeffers is an American illustrator of
children's book who has been gracing author's works
with her pen and ink drawings for forty-odd years
and has illustrated some fifty books.
She is the author/illustrator for eight of them.
She is perhaps most known for her current collaboration
with Rosemary Wells on the McDuff series.
Her story is a relatively straight-forward one.
Born in Oakland, New Jersey, she grew up with
an early interest and demonstrated aptitude in art.
She graduated from the New York Pratt Institute in 1964
and began an initial career in the publishing industry
in New York City. She became interested in children's
books and began freelancing in children's books design
and illustration. She was involved with a number
of books by various authors in the late 1960's.

After a number of publications including
The Buried Moon by Joseph Jacobs in 1969,
she started a project to retell and illustrate the
traditional story of The Three Jovial Huntsmen.
After preparing a complete version of the story,
Jeffers and her publisher decided that it was not quite
what they were looking for. Jeffers sat down and
rewrote and re-illustrated the whole story which
was then published in 1973 and received a 1974
Caldecott Honor Award. If you are going to rewrite
and re-illustrate a whole story, it is nice if it is
then recognized so prestigiously.

Florence Mary Anderson (1897 - 1940)

Florence Mary Anderson flourished between
1914 and 1930, working as a watercolour painter,
wood engraver and illustrator.
She also illustrated under her maiden name of Molly MacArthur.
She also wrote a few books but is best known for
her illustration of children's books and annuals,
working in black and white as well as watercolour.
